A Legacy of Expertise in Jewelry Appraisals
Balzan Gem Laboratory was founded by Cortney Balzan, a pioneer in the gemological industry with over 45 years of experience. In 1983, he became the first Master Gemologist Appraiser (MGA) in Northern and Central California and is the only person worldwide to hold the combined credentials of MGA, GG, FGA, and DGA.
Cortney has served as a consultant to one of the largest jewelry retailers in the U.S., supporting over 100 stores with expert appraisals, repairs, and quality control. His career has taken him around the globe, where he has studied pearls, diamonds, gemstones, and mining practices under the guidance of world-renowned experts.
A dedicated educator, Cortney founded the American Gemological Learning Center and co-established the Allied Teaching Center with the Gemological Association of Great Britain. He has taught at multiple institutions, including the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, and holds a Post-Secondary Teaching Credential from the State of California.

Meet Patrick Balzan
Patrick Balzan, Cortney’s son, is a second-generation gemologist who grew up immersed in the jewelry world. By age 19, he earned the prestigious FGA designation, becoming one of the youngest ever to do so.
Patrick began his professional journey managing quality control and repairs at Balzan Laboratories, overseeing hundreds of pieces daily. He later joined a fast-growing national jewelry brand, gaining experience in sales, branding, and customer engagement, before returning to the family business with expanded insight.
Now serving as the lab’s resident diamond expert, Patrick continues the Balzan tradition of integrity, precision, and education, with over 20 years of hands-on experience.
